I have longed to eat street food in China, but David got scared off early on about it.
Last spring one of his good friends encouraged me to embrace it. He said, "You might look at where they are cooking and say 'I'm going to die.' but the place where you are going to get food poisoning is a five star hotel. On the other hand stay away from sausage."
So, I have happily starting trying some street food. We have plenty just on our block.
This morning, because we are still experiencing the jet lag that gets you up really early in the morning, we went for a walk and picked up this delicious breakfast; steamed buns and Chinese Tea Leaf eggs. We took them up to our balcony and feasted while watching the city come to life.
This place is about a half block from our apartment. We have walked past it a zillion times and seen countless people walking by munching on their food. I felt like such a snob not trying it.
They even have a kitty guarding the place.
I googled the recipe for the eggs, "Chinese Tea Leaf Eggs" I believe the secret ingredient is anise.

Yum, anise. Your brother and his wife gave me some Swedish salt licorice which I have been savoring this week. Someone at farmers market told me you can put anise in kringla...
ReplyDeleteThat is true about anise in Kringla. Of course, I have never done that because Grandma Skogerbo never did it that way. Those eggs are really good and pretty inside.
