When I actually decided to purchase a pair with a little bling and not high heels, I was too intimidated by my huge feet. I know, size 8 is not necessarily huge here, but there they are. Also, my lack of Chinese language skills was a problem. So when they would look at me like, are you kidding? I decided I couldn't do it.
So, I remembered on one of excursions to the closest TESCO, kind of like our Walmart, I had seen these shoes in a little shop as I came down the escalator. I thought, I'll just buy them and put them on a shelf at home and I can remember this trip with those shoes.
Well, I had no idea how humbling it would be to ask to buy them. There are little shops in this building really close together and I couldn't find who was selling them right away so there were a few sales people, who spoke no English helping me. Of course, the sales clerk looked at my feet and indicated she did not have them in my size. I indicated back I didn't want to wear them, but I did want to buy them. I was trying to be a good sport about it, but they must have had bets on who was going to buy those shoes and they did not have someone like me in mind, an old American woman, in jeans, Owatonna sweatshirt and walking shoes. They seemed to think it was funny. Honestly, it was pretty funny.
Again, I was unable to explain about buying them as a souvenir to put on a shelf and this thought probably never crossed their minds.
Aren't they cool? I think I'll by a pair every time I go back now!
I was able to find a pair with a little bling in my size and a reasonable little heel. They were on the sales rack because they were so gigantic, I'm sure. But the sales girl was so kind and helpful and didn't make me feel like a lumbering oaf.

oh my goodness...they are the coolest things ever!!!...and I think as a decoration they are perfect. They look like an accident waiting to happen for ladies our age. And I love the little brown ones you bought..very versatile and perfect with jeans. Ava will probably covet them. Girl, you need a girlfriend over there to go shopping with!! :-)
ReplyDeleteBarb, you are so right I need a girlfriend who speaks fluent Chinese and English over there. Ava will have to choose between my gray boots and my Chinese shoes to clump around in now.
